AREA DENTIST ASSURE TOOTHBRUSHES FOR OUR KIDS

Often equipped with little more than a stick, area dentists make it possible for our kids to receive toothbrushes and toothpaste.

Often equipped with little more than a stick, area dentists make it possible for our kids to receive toothbrushes and toothpaste.

Much thanks goes out to so many dentists and dental supply companies who gathered together to support Matanya’s Hope.

Patterson Dental Supply, Sunstar Dental Supply, Dr. Conen of Chicago, Dr. Richard Mantoan of Southland Smiles in Flossmoor and The Center for Dental Excellence in Flossmoor. All have united for this great cause: providing children with dental hygiene supplies.

To Ileana who took our mission to heart and helped us reach hundreds of children. Thank you all!

Let’t pray that next year we can run our first Dental Mission!

Matanya’s Hope departs on June 30th for our 10th annual mission to Kenya.

Please support us by donating funds. We’ve got to get the donations there!

SOLES FOR SOULS

Much thanks to the LeCavalier family for donating their gently used shoes to our children in Kenya!

Much thanks to the LeCavalier family for donating their gently used shoes to our children in Kenya!

We choose them. We buy them. We wear them.

Each donation from a child (or adult) in the USA can equip a needy child in Kenya with shoes – what could be better than that?

This year, Matanya’s Hope is thrilled to be delivering hundreds of shoes from hundreds of donors like yourselves!

Heartfelt thanks to Grace Church, Camby Indiana, who's members took up a church wide collection of shoes, clothing and school supplies during the month of Lent.

In just 30 short days, Matanya’s Hope will be starting our 2.5 month journey through Kenya, delivering your donations to those in need.

We travel village to village – often stopping on the road where women, men and children are walking barefooted over rough terrain. We have shoes in our car and the first thing we do is size their feet. Within minutes, the gift of shoes changes everything!

DONATION OF RAINWATER TANKS SAVE LIVES

Donors Amber & Joel and United Technologies make the lifesaving gift of water a reality for more than 300 school children and faculty in rural Kenya.

"Prior to the donation of 10,000 liter rainwater storage tank, students like Naini Rarin (pictured above) had to walk great distances to collect bacteria filled river water for drinking"

“Prior to the donation of 10,000 liter rainwater storage tank, students like Naini Rarin (pictured above) had to walk great distances to collect bacteria filled river water for drinking”

This very water, needed for life, can be the culprit which threatens a child’s existence. It is frequently riddled with bacteria which causes diseases such as typhoid, malaria and brucellosis. Without treatment, each of these diseases can cause death.

Much thanks to Amber, Joel and United Technologies for donating enough funding to provide one 10,000 liter rainwater tank for Irura Primary school, located in rural Kenya. This gift can potentially save many lives and most certainly will enhance the lives of every child who attends Irura Primary school.

Prior to the birth of the Matanya’s Hope Rainwater Storage Tank Program, children attending Irura and other day schools were often in states of lethargy. “It was as if I was looking at children who were not present in their own minds”, says Stark, Matanya’s Hope Founder,”but once we delivered the tanks, the children started coming back to life!”

Thank you Amber, Joel and United Technologies for this gift of LIFE!

TRYING TO MAKE SENSE OF THE SENSELESS
Alshabab attacks on Garissa University – KENYA
prayer by Michelle Stark

Little crabs crawl on a salted ocean rock
Ocean waves come and go
The sun rises and sets
And to most –
The world looks so normal
We even forget to count the days
Until we realize that a whole month has passed
Or a whole year
Or even a lifetime…

But when tragedy strikes
It stops time
It stops hearts
It stops life

I want to cry out to God
But can’t find the words
The tears are stuck
A gray mask begins to seal itself around my life
I can’t see out beyond the pain
Hope has returned to a seed
Waiting once again for a chance to germinate
And my world has stopped

Ticking clocks are only relative to time passing

God help me find you in this.
Help me see beyond the pain.

Help me know intrinsically that YOU ARE STILL THE HOPE AND PEACE OF THE WORLD
That you have not forgotten us

Father help guide me

My vessel is covered with a veil

My soul seeks the intrinsic call of love
The hope filled seeds of joy
And words that make sense

But the waters have turned to scarlet
And the earth to bullets in the sand
The birds are silent
Screams fill the air
Even today, when the screams have vanished
I still hear them
I hear the cries of the innocent

And I wonder

What is this life?

Help me make sense of it Father.

People awaken to a new day
Step out of bed
Yawn and stretch
Taking all for granted.

Whatever is planned is planned…
Until the spear severs the corn

Until silence falls on everything

God help me because I can’t make sense of this!
Love,
Michelle

God Rest Their Souls – God Protect Our Kenya

If we change our thoughts from it's too late to there's still hope - we might see some change in the world.

The night before was normal. Some stayed up late studying, talking and enjoying life while others rested early. But at 4:30 in the morning on April 2, all of that normalcy was to change.

INNOCENCE VIOLATED WHILE SLEEPING
Reportedly, four armed Alshabab men stormed into Garissa University, running through the dorms, waking students and opening fire on all. According to a female student who escaped the flying bullets, there was no ID checking or religion qualifying. They just screamed and shot!

Garissa University is located near the Kenya-Somalian border, a porous border stretching 700 km long. According to student reports, the students at Garissa have begged for increased protection due to the University’s tumultuous location. But all requests for protection were continually denied. This week, these same students suffered in a retaliative act by the Alshabab – who are punishing Kenya for their strong stance against terrorism.

A recent article in the Jerusalem Post states that Reuters, located in the Somali capital, received the following email statement: “No amount of precaution or safety measures will be able to guarantee your safety, thwart another attack or prevent another bloodbath from occurring in your cities.” It further stated that “This will be a long, gruesome war of which you, the Kenyan public, are its first casualties.”

Police state that 8 men are in hiding while Kenyan media has shown mugshots of these men and has warned Kenyan’s of possible further attacks.

Kenya has beefed up it’s security both on the ground and in the air. Owners of malls in Nairobi and in the port city of Mombasa has also increased their private security.

Although Matanya’s Hope students attend numerous schools, all are far from the Somalian border. The threat of violence, however, has fallen on heavy hearts. Vincent, one of our university students shared with me earlier that: “Today is a sad day for me. I lost a good friend during the Garrisa attack. His name is Mark…a bright student.” Imagine this loss occurred just weeks after Vincent lost his dad.

Three of our students lost friends – but how many more lost family? How much innocence was wasted? May God protect us all as we cry out for protection and peace.

In the USA, 911 called us to our knees.
Please take a moment and join me there again, this time for Kenya… for our world… and for our kids. We all need each other. We can’t do this alone.

147 Kenyans awakened from their sleep and murdered at Garissa University . A terrible day for global humanity. Heavenly Father. Please console the families.

FRANCIS AND FAITH – Memories

Nairutia, Kenya

We’d driven hours to get to this small mountain town of Nairutia, Kenya. Even with windows closed, the dust became so plentiful inside of our car that we could taste the flavor of the earth on our tongues. Not my favorite dish – I might say – but It didn’t matter. We were here for a purpose.

Francis... after running all of the way home from school.

Francis… after running all of the way home from school.

After one more lengthy stretch of desert brush lined – compressed earthen road, we finally reached our destination. Father Maina’s mother greeted us with opened arms. She was happy to see us again. We were happy to see her as well.

Guka’s (grandfather’s) pace was slow but steady as he approached us. He’d been suffering from dementia and I wondered if how our presence on the homestead would feel. HIs warm smile revealed all. I held out my hand and gently welcomed his in a greeting that remains memorable in my heart. What a joy it was to be in this place again – with the people we’ve come to know.

Father Maina’s mother (mama Maina) worked side by side with Peris, her helping hands, to prepare a lovely meal for us. We were honored by their efforts. Chapati (circular shaped soft, flat bread), vegetables and a plentiful dish of chicken protein were served to all. Wow! Our hungry bodies reveled in the presentation. Guka joined us, first with his heaping bowl of maize and beans and then again (I think he forgot that he just ate) for chicken, potatoes, greens, rice and chapati. It was a joy to see him eat. (I know they’ve been having some difficulties getting him to take food).

But we were not there for food.
We came for a purpose today.
Like so many other regions in Kenya, this place too is remote and filled with great need.

The children filed in – one by one – with their hopeful mums in tow.
Child and adult garments alike were tattered and torn. The boys were adorned in pants, too big or too small and the girls were graced by dresses that had probably seen better days long ago. The sitting room that comfortably fit our mission team and Father Maina’s family soon welcomed every guest that entered that compound. Tables became chairs and it all worked very well.

Francis and Faith were newly accepted into our program and were amongst the many others who were still yearning for a chance: A chance to be sponsored. A chance to go to boarding school.

Thoughts began flooding my mind. I could hardly register them at the speed by which they arrived.

This precious child is Faith, 20011. Today she and her brother Francis are sponsored by Matanya's Hope and is thriving in school.

This precious child is Faith, 20011. Today she and her brother Francis are sponsored by Matanya’s Hope and is thriving in school.

That’s when I saw her.

The cracks in her feet have healed as parched craters and crevices. They’ve been there for too long for the skin to ever reunite as before, on the other side. I notice her toughened soles. She comes to us barefooted…. her young boy in tow. She has no money to get his report form from the school and quietly, almost shamefully asks: “what shall I do?”

Thought: my thought: Sponsorship needs to occur.

They smell like sweet earth. So little. At 10, she looks like 6. Her nose is running – clear but steady. The same with Francis. At first glance, her clothes look bright and new, but as she drew near, it only took a moment to register the tattered pullover and frayed skirt. The truth I already knew was now portrayed in such visual clarity; I could hardly remain composed. Her tiny feet touch the earth. I wonder what shoes they’ve ever known.

Dear readers.
Thank you for being here with me.
I wish we could all reach out and touch these beautiful children.
Next year I promise myself: I will bring more shoes. More blankets. More school supplies.
And I pray, God will provide more sponsors and the children who may feel forgotten can still have hope.

To Gretchen, Erika, Tina and Lisa….thank you all.
If this earth really has angels… you are surely some!

Until next time,
Michelle

Grace loves making rubber band bracelets!

She was determined to make an entire collection and then send them with Matanya’s Hope on mission to touch the hearts of the kids in Kenya.

But Grace did not stop with bracelets! She copied a verse from the bible for each recipient, sharing with them a message of faith, hope and love.
